Wider Black Sea Region Intership

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grant making institution dedicated to promoting greater cooperation and understanding between the United States and Europe. The GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working on transatlantic issues, by conveying leaders to discuss the most pressing transatlantic themes, and by examining ways in which transatlantic cooperation can address a variety of global policy challenges. Founded in 1972 through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has seven offices in Europe: Berlin, Bratislava, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara and Bucharest.

Work description:
The Bucharest office is seeking for a young academic enrolled at University/Master with a focus on foreign policy.
The internship will cover both research and event management, i.e. following events in the Wider Black Sea Region, research on issues of relevance to the region and to GMF work, conceptualizing, planning, execution, support and wrap-up of conferences, lectures and workshops concerning various aspects issues. Prior experience in this field would be a plus.
The applicant should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a small team. Fluency in both English and Romanian is required.
The individual is expected to:
Produce weekly country and issue briefs, for countries and issues of relevance to and interest for GMF in the Black Sea region;
Assist in grant making Database entry and maintenance
Managing production and implementation of in-house mailing projects;
Providing administrative/ clerical support;
Maintaining filing systems; and Other duties as assigned.
The position is unpaid. At the end of the internship program the intern will be provided references and a certificate which will attest the completion of the program.

The objectives of the GMF internship are to:
Primarily, provide interns with an opportunity to gain practical work experience to their academic program or future work in a field related to the GMF's mission.
Secondly, enable GMF offices to benefit from the work undertaken by interns
Work in an international environment on political issues.
Gain experience working in a mutual learning and knowledge sharing environment with world experts.

Awards

Arifin Wardiman Author Prize consists of a certificate and a monetary award of US$350. The criteria are high technical quality and a good presentation of the papers. The finalists are informed with notification of acceptance. The winners are decided by a selection committee and awarded at the closing ceremony. Eligible authors wishing to be considered for this prize should indicate when they submit contributions.

Authors are invited to submit full paper to secretariat electronically. All material must be written in English, and a paper submitted only if you intend to attend the conference. The full paper should include the title, name(s) of the author(s), mailing address, affiliation, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address wherever possible. One registration is eligible for two papers. Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceeding. Minimum Requirements

The minimum requirements for all applicants to the graduate PSIR programme are:

1.. Award of a recognised first BA/BS/BSc degree, or equivalent.

2.. A minimum CGPA score of 2.5 (or equivalent)

Additional Requirements

In addition, depending on the origin or educational background of certain applicants, some or all of the following requirements will be requested:

a.. To undertake this Masters programme students must have a thorough command of written and spoken English. If the applicantâ€™s first language is not English s/he must obtain or provide evidence of one of the following recognised English Language qualifications:

1.. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) : the usual requirement is an overall minimum score of 6.

2.. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) : the usual requirements are an overall minimum score of 490 (paper-based test) or 187 (computer based TOEFL test) or 75 (internet TOEFL).

3.. Or KPDS/UDS minimum of 80.

4.. Or METU Proficiency minimum of 75.

5.. If applicants do not achieve one of the above scores they may be encouraged to send in their certificate anyway because in such cases the University may recommend that the applicant re-take the test or that s/he attend pre-sessional English courses provided by the University.

6.. Applicants who have studied for at least 12 months at an institution of higher education either in the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand will not need an English Language certificate. If an applicant has been educated entirely in English then s/he may provide written evidence of this in the application.
a.. Applicants who are citizens of Turkey will be required to take the ALES graduate entry exam and meet a minimum score of ALES 55.

Non-disciplinary

Applicants will be accepted into the programme who satisfy the minimum requirements but who are not graduates in political science and/or international relations. Those without a background in Political Science and/or International Relations but with a background in social sciences may still apply and their qualification and suitability for entry to the programme will be determined on an individual basis, subject to the discretion of the admissionsâ€™ officer.
In individual cases preliminary or preparatory (â€˜scientific preparationâ€™) courses may be required of applicants and these will be specified by the graduate studies committee.

Applications for admission to the Masters programme may be made between 1st January and 30th August each year.
Normally admissions decisions will be made within one month of receipt of all required documents.
Applications will be accepted from those who anticipate to have graduated by July preceding the September of registration.

Italian PhD Scholarship in Science and Management of Climate Change

CALL for APPLICATION 2009/2010

In 2007, the Department of Economics and the Department of Environmental Sciences of the Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice, in collaboration with the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC), have launched a 3-year PhD Programme in Science and Management of Climate Change.

Every year, up to twelve students are enrolled in this Ph.D. programme. All lectures are given in English by internationally renowned professors.

The PhD Programme is organised into two streams:

* Dynamic Climatology at the CMCC Headquarters in Bologna
* Climate Change Impact and Management, at the Department of Economics of the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice

For the year 2009/2010 (25th cycle of Italian PhD Programmes) we offer three scholaships with the financial support of the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change.

Courses and credits

The courses will start in September 2009.
During the first year, PhD students will attend twelve 5-credit courses (30-40 hours of lectures, seminars or labs per course). Eleven courses are planned in each of the two thematic streams, and students will choose the twelfth one from the list of courses of the other stream. Credits are acquired by attending the courses and passing a final exam.

Tutors

During the first year, each student will be assigned a tutor who will be the main reference of the PhD candidates over the 3-year period. Tutors can be academics or distinguished researchers in disciplinary fields related to the PhD programme.

Thesis

A thesis proposal, coordinated by an academic advisor, must be presented after the first year. The final thesis is due at the end of the three years. An extension is possible in exceptional cases. The thesis, written in English, is reviewed by two international referees.

Prerequisites

In order to apply, students are required to hold an Italian “Laurea magistrale” or an equivalent foreign university degree (e.g. MSc or DEA). Foreign applicants shall provide full documentation of their university studies, including course profiles. Knowledge of the English language is a necessary prerequisite. Students are required to send proof of their knowledge of English (Toefl, Cambridge Certificate, etc).

Please note: Candidates for the Dynamic Climatology Stream should have a background in mathematics or physics at the BA level. Previous experience with numerical modelling and programming in a UNIX/Linux environment would be desirable, though not essential.
The Stream on “Impact and Management of Climate Change” has a multidisciplinary approach and background on Economics or Enviromental Science are preferably. Proficiency in mathematics is requested e.g. integral and differential calculus, linear algebra.

Applications for the PhD programme must be formally submitted by sending an application form together with the following documents:

* Proposal for a research project to be carried out during the three years;
* Curriculum vitae;
* Presentation/recommendation letters by previous tutors/professors;

Other documents that may be considered are the following:

* Degree certificates and scores (or equivalent)
* Masters degree certificate or other specialisation courses;
* Academic transcripts (list of courses with grades);
* Scientific publications, including an English abstract;
* Certificates of research experience at universities or research institutions;
* Score in GRE, GMAT, TOEFL or similar standard tests.

The candidate’s ability to carry out high level research activities will be screened through the evaluation of the documentation attached to the application form. Phone interviews may be organised if necessary.

Post Doctoral Research Position
The UTAustin|Portugal Program and the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (under the project below) invite applications for an one-year Postdoctoral Position in Computational Mathematics, beginning October 2009.

The focus of the research is on imaging sciences and scientific computing. It involves variational image processing, image analysis, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, optimization, visualization, and inverse problems in imaging, with applications in medicine and emphasis on endoscopic images.

Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics or Computational Sciences and Engineering (preferably obtained after December 31, 2006). The position obeys to the Portuguese scholarship system and the corresponding salary is €1495 per month (tax free). No teaching duties are associated with the position.

The University of Padova, through the funding of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo, offers research fellowships for foreign students to attend Doctoral Schools/International Courses. During the 3-year doctoral programme, successful candidates will be offered full board and lodging.
